Bio
Jon J. Cherney, M.D. is board certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery with a Subspecialty Certification in Surgery of the Hand. He specializes in arthroscopy of the wrist, elbow, and shoulder and has special interest in reconstruction of areas affected by rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis, nerve compression syndromes and children’s hand issues.
Dr. Cherney is a Wisconsin native. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Wisconsin – Madison. He then completed his medical degree from the University of Wisconsin Medical School and respectfully was honored by the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. His residency was completed at the University of Wisconsin Hospitals and Clinics – Department of Surgery. After residency, he traveled to Cincinnati, Ohio to complete his fellowship at the Mary S. Stern Hand Surgery Fellowship program.
In 1995, Dr. Cherney and his family happily returned back to Wisconsin to start his practice as an Orthopedic Hand Surgeon at the Dean Medical Center in Madison WI. During this time he was assigned as Director of the St. Mary’s Hospital Rotation for the University of Wisconsin Orthopedic Residency and was the Chief of Surgery. In 1999 he was awarded the Okagaki Teacher of the Year Award by the orthopedic residents.
Dr. Jon Cherney joined Hand to Shoulder Center of Wisconsin in 2001. In 2012, Stephanie M. Knapp, PA-C, MPAS joined Dr. Cherney as his in-clinic physician’s assistant and first orthopedic surgical assistant in the operating room.
Dr. Cherney is an active contributing member of Phi Beta Kappa Society and Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. In Dr. Cherney’s spare time he enjoys fishing, weight training, coaching youth sports, basketball, hunting, and playing guitar.
Stephanie M. Knapp operates as his orthopedic surgical assistant.
